Built in 1783 to resemble a farm in Normandy, the Hameau de la Reine is a lesser-visited site in the Versailles gardens that is well worth the extra hike. With thatched roofs, farm buildings, and a fishing tower around a beautiful pond, the Hameau was a rustic spot for Marie Antoinette and her ladies to dress up as shepherdesses and play "country." It's perfectly preserved and located adjacent to the Versailles gardens and the Petit & Grand Trianons.
