The Museum of Natural History is a historical monument unto itself: the gardens opened in 1635 in order to grow medicinal plants and it became a national museum after the Revolution. Since then, the garden and the buildings on its grounds have seen great advances in scientific research. Today, the highlight for most amateurs is the Grande Galérie de l'Evolution, an enormous, multi-story display of the world's creatures.
