The Musée Carnavalet houses all sorts of artifacts that relate to the history of Paris. Over 100 rooms in two beautiful old mansions (the 16th-century Hôtel Carnavalet and the 17th-century Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau) tell the city's story through paintings, photographs, archaeological artifacts, and models.
Be sure you spend some time in the perfectly-manicured courtyard as well. It's a taste of Paris's rich past and an entry into the Marais of yesteryear.
Special exhibitions, too.
