The Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots are more than cafés – they’re cultural landmarks. Le Café de Flore was Appolinaire’s HQ, and also a favorite of Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in their day. Les Deux Magots was surrealist territory, with André Breton at the head of the pack, but also saw William Faulkner and many other writers. As such, they’ve become way too fashionable and overpriced, but it’s worth checking out at least once, if only for the people-watching in the Saint-Germain-des-Près neighborhood (snag a spot out on the street if the weather’s nice).
